Grant Guidelines and Policies

To support qualified organizations operating within the state of Missouri that relieve human misery, want and suffering regardless of age, race, religion or economic status
To support both independent and institutional educational programs that develop and empower individuals of all ages to become more productive members of their communities
To establish, maintain, and support student scholarships that further the educational opportunities for and objectives of highly qualified candidates
To contribute to regularly organized religious institutions, and the establishment, preservation and rehabilitation of historically significant places, assets, programs and that make a meaningful and positive impact in their communities
To support organizations and programs that seek to improve the health, wellness, longevity and happiness of members of their communities
The programs hereby referred to may be open to any qualified group which, in the discretion of the Board of Directors, falls within the purposes of the Foundation

Geographic Restrictions

The geographic focus of the Green Foundation is limited to central Missouri, including the counties of Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Montgomery, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, and Randolph. Any application that supports program delivery outside of the Green Foundation's geographical focus will not be considered.

Preferences

Human and social service programs providing direct services to people in need
Youth development programs
Innovative developmental and educational programs for children
Health and hospitals (funding for research projects is not included in this priority)
Religious institutions with an emphasis on projects that support community churches and the provision of social services

General Considerations

Please consider the following when submitting a request to the Foundation.

Is the participation of the Foundation going to make a significant difference in the project or program?
How are the people in the geographic or subject area to be served supporting the project?
“Seed money” to launch a new project or program is a desirable type of grant.
Grants will be made for one year only with no commitment for years ahead should the Board no longer consider the project a high priority matter.
Priority will be given to new projects and to those that have not been funded for at least one year.
Although providing money for “bricks and mortar” as such is not of interest, it may be desirable to provide facilities to get a worthwhile project started or expanded.
The promoters of the project should indicate by what standards they will measure the success or failure of the project.
It is required that within twelve months of receiving the grant, a report on the progress of the project be sent to the Foundation.
The Foundation Board awards grants twice each year at meetings in May and November with deadlines in the spring and fall, respectively.

Ineligible Request examples

To individuals
To projects and programs located outside of the United States
To a charity that is not publicly supported
For social causes or for social activism
For lobbying, propagandizing, or for political campaigns
To requests deemed inappropriate for a variety of other reasons

Requests unlikely to be funded

Projects / programs located outside of central Missouri
Commitment of funds for more than one year
Grants for operating funds and annual budgets
Unspecified general funds
Projects with a perceived small chance of success
Programs that would seem unlikely to continue without further funding from the Green Foundation
Large capital fund drives
Large building fund drives
Large endowments
To an organization whose primary mission it is to raise and distribute funds
To federated giving programs

Historic Foundation guidelines

The Foundation's original trust indenture identified the following list as the grantmaking guidelines.

To contribute to and assist, by disbursement, donation, or loans, to regularly organized religious institutions
To establish, maintain or endow, in whole or in part, or contribute to chairs, professorships, lecture courses, fellowships or scholarships in institutions of learning
To establish or contribute to loan funds in aid of students in institutions of learning
To initiate, establish, maintain or contribute to projects or programs for the preservation, extension or dissemination or learning, including research in any field of human knowledge and to make such use and disposition of the results thereof as the Trustee may determine
To contribute, by disbursement, donation or loan to the establishment and maintenance of hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged or helpless
To initiate, establish, maintain or contribute to programs for the relief of human misery, want, and suffering. While it is not intended that the Trustee shall distribute to individual alms, the programs hereby referred to may be limited to any group or class which, in the discretion of the Trustee, falls within the purposes of the Foundation
